Strengths: Excellent sound and picture, Auto setup works awesome. 3 HDMI input, HDMI pass thru. Easy setup (with some tricks)
Weaknesses: Don't look as cool as say a Harmon, no upscaling at HDMI signal, (so SD programming from my DVR don't get upscaled.) Difficult setup if you don't follow my instructions. not so good remote.
Summary: Ok 1st off, I was researching for a AVR for around $500 (got it here for $478 with a 25% off coupon code) The setup is hard if your just going off the manual. Use this thread to help youhttp://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1050097more importantly, this posthttp://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14445722#post14445722This helped me to set mine up in under 2 hours including all wire connection and audyssey. The sound is awsome, it blew all my previous home theather in a box away in a heartbeat. The HDMI pass thru is such a great feature. It bascially allows the 1909 to pass thru HDMI signals (HDMI only) to your TV without being turned on (on standby mode). So when you are just watching tv without the need for 5.1, just turn on the tv and the receiver will pass thru video and audio to your tv.

Strengths: Volume control that smooths out the loud commercials. Easy setup (for a Denon)
Weaknesses: None
Summary: This is my fourth Denon receiver, and it's the best. The Audyssey Dynamic volume control really works! We no longer have to grab the remote to turn down the volume because of loud commercials. This was a real problem in the past when watching HD channels. Setup was easy due to the automatic setup feature and the included microphone, which resulted in great equalization and sound. I did turn down the surround speakers after the setup because they were too loud for me. This receive is much better than the AVR-1705 it replaced. I may buy another one to replace my aging AVR-2801.

Strengths: Many inputs/outputs; HDMI switching is great; plenty of power; auto-setup of speakers worked great.
Weaknesses: While three hdmi inputs are great - I've got them filled...
Summary: This is my first true AV receiver. I bought this Christmas along with a set of Onkyo speakers. GREAT sound! This replaced a fairly inexpensive HTIB system in my 12' x 30' family room. Wow, what a difference. There is so much more depth and detail to music, DVDs, even TV. Sorry, I'm no audiophile, so probably not enough technical detail for some of you, but for those looking for a great sounding home theater receiver, I spent a few days reading reviews and comments all over the net and decided this unit seemed to be the best in class for the price. I would not hesitate to recommend the DENON AVR-1909!
