Strengths: Low Cost for functionality.
Weaknesses: Doesn't perform as specified.
Summary: I purchased a SR-805S from 6ave because it advertised 1080p output and HDMI switching, at a low price. The other reviews I read lead me to believe that it was capable of outputting 1920x1080 @ 60Hz which I thought would be perfect. Yes the unit outputs at 1920x1080 but it scales 1920x1080 HDMI PC inputs so ultimately they look terrible. I called Onkyo, called 6ave, and eleven days out of your 30 day return window and your stuck with it. BEWARE: If you want to connect a HDMI input from a PC and want 1920x1080 you will want to by-pass connecting through this receiver because IT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY DEGRADE YOUR VIDEO QUALITY. I commend those buyers that are able to catch all of the nuances of a device (with a 120 page manual) within their 30-day return window and ditch it. I unfortunately was not one of them.

Strengths: Great sound. WOW
Weaknesses: Heavy, but not an issue for me.
Summary: The Onkyo 805 is a great system. I upgraded from the 605 to the 805, I was lucky enough to have just purchased the 605 35 days before CircuitCity dropped their price from $1099 to $799. If you are on the fence and trying to figure out if it worth the extra money to get the 805 compared to the 605 then depending on the kind of speakers you have I would say "YES". My current system setup is Mirage V2 Left / Right and center channel. Mirage Nano Prestige surround and Mirage 8 inch subwoofer. I have a 7.1 setup. PS3 is used to play movies and music. The speaker wire is as cheep as it comes. (I am having some professional come in and run the high end speaker wires later if you are wondering why cheep speaker wire). I had the 605 for approx 30 days and watch at least 30 movies and listen to several hours of different kinds of music. Then took back the 605 and got the 805 hooked it back up to the same speaker setup and the sound is NIGHT and DAY difference. The best way to describe it is the sound is more powerful, it fills the room. The volume range is something like -50 db to 18 db. We keep it at -15 db for music and movies and the sound is amazing. If I take it up to 0 db on the volume no joke the whole room with start to vibrate and the cat will go running for cover. The room is 16 feet by 17 feet (Living room). When I paid the extra money for the receiver I was a little worried that it wasn't worth it, but after I plugged it in turned it on it was like "Oh YEA". I am not going to list of the settings, but I will say the setup was very easy (Please note that I did have trouble with the 605 because it was the very first time I ever setup a receiver), but if you ever set up a receiver this is easy and automatic speaker setup was simple. It will do up to six or 8 different listening positions. I only did three because the way our room is setup. Also good to note is this is about twice as heavy as the 605, but I was able to put it on my TV stand in the same place as the 605 with no problems so the size difference between the 605 and 805 are about the same. The 805 is a few inches deeper and about 1 inch taller.

Strengths: Impressive quality product
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: Extremely complex. Not for the novice. Does require calibration and good knowledge of A/V connection setups. Definitely not a plug and play. It did have one hiccup; the remote control de-coupled itself and wouldn't be recognized by the receiver, I needed to run receiver setup and reset the channel for the remote. It worked fine after the setup, but I am now uneasy on what will cause this to do it again. Onkyo was very responsive and articulated a cure for the remote control problem; very impressive customer service response.

Strengths: Future Proof; plenty of power features
Weaknesses: Gets really hot!
Summary: I was wanting to upgrade to a high-end future proof Audio/Video Receiver (AVR). I did a lot of research, and came to the conclusion that theTX-SR805 was the best bang for the buck. Onkyo provides a 2-year warranty, which is better than many other manufacturers. This receiver will decode all the latest and greatest high-def audio formats, and is HDMI 1.3 compatible. The remote control is learning, and comes with pre-programmed codes. This is nice, as the only thing I do with the TV is turn it on and off, since the HDMI integration within the AVR allows only a single cable to the TV, and the TV always is on the same input. The remote has a convenient dedicated TV on/off and input-select buttons. The remote is a bit bulky, however, and quite heavy! While it is backlit with button on the side, the text indicating the input selection is not on the button, but on the remote itself, which means that you can't really see what input you are selecting! Major oversight!Hookup was a breeze. It has 3-HDMI inputs (4 would have been nice!), has pre-outs, and multiple coax/toslink digital audio inputs. Note that if you want to use the multi-room feature, the amplifier for the second room only works off of analog inputs. So if you want to play audio in the second room, you need to bring in both analog and digital inputs from that audio source. Kind of lame. But even with these minor knocks, I am extremely happy with it. It sounds fantastic in our 7.1 system, equipped with Polk audio speakers.

Strengths: Farouda DCDI, upconverting,power,looks
Weaknesses: size,weight for my situation.
Summary: This is my second Onkyo receiver, replacing my TX-SR777, which still works fine.(I'm giving it to a friend) Set-up went well with auto speaker set-up mic supplied. Sound Quality is amazing, HDMI great, lots of power and a nice looking piece also. Remote OK, but I'll probably use my Harmony 880. Amazon had a great price and you get so much more for your money then with Denon.

Summary: Many of my friends recommended this unit, though it was little more than my budget I went for this model to have a receiver with all the features. Its very easy to setup, and little heavy to move it around. Also heard it gets hotter on long use, but so far I didnt see the issue on mine.I like the multichannel setup, to support our kitchen, patio.

Strengths: It does it all - If you need more than this receiver provides, you might waste your money.
Weaknesses: It's heavy but that's because of the beefy power supply. It gets warm but for the same reason. The delay in switching inputs could probably be better.
Summary: I have owned Onkyo products for over 20 years now. Just when you think they have peaked and others are better.....they release a gem like this....WOW !! I got rid of a Denon 3806 just so I could replace it with this receiver. Through a discreet Crutchfield promotion I was able to pick up one of these fresh units for $620. And absolutely NO company selling electronics does it better than Crutchfield....THE VERY VERY BEST. The speaker set-up was a cake walk and the results were perfect. I took (8) different readings in about 20 minutes and the receiver did the calculations. The results were impressive at the very least - no dead spots anywhere in my listening area. Take your time and carefully read the manual when you set it up. Onkyo combines the 875 receiver information into this manual also (which you have to ignore) but could possibly confuse you if don't pay close attention. This receiver has it all - probably more than I will be able to use. But it's nice to know that if a need does develop, this receiver will handle it easily in the future!

Strengths: Tons of features; supports latest HD formats; great value; solid construction
Weaknesses: Second zone needs analog inputs; overkill
Summary: I bought into all the hype on needing the latest generation AVR to support the new HD audio codecs. I had bought an Onkyo TX-SR804 receiver just over a year ago, and it was already out of date! I needed HDMI 1.3 and the support for the Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD, or so I thought. I sold my 804 at a loss, but managed to pick up the 805 at a good price. My first impressions upon opening the box is how much bigger it is that the 804! It's about 10-lbs heavier, and its about an inch taller. I liked the layout of the speaker posts on back. They are all in a straight line, with the Right Channels on one side, and the Left Channels on the other side, with the center channel in the middle. It was very intuitive to hookup, and since they were spread-out, it was easy to access each post. The HDMI hookups (wish there were four, instead of three!) were easily accessible toward the top. On-screen setup was easy as well. I had to initially use the display on the RCVR, in order to turn on the HDMI video outputs. I don't think I used the manual at all, as the setup was extremely intuitive! The only issue I had with my 5.1 channel setup was that I could not find a way to tell it to not use the rear surrount. It only had 6.1 or 7.1 options. As a result, when I ran the test-tone, it would go quiet when playing the unconnected rear-surround channel. No biggie, or I just didn't find a way! The system sounds fantastic, and I'm very happy. I've used Onkyo products for the last 15-years, and have never been let down. However, after all of this setup, I realize that I probably could have just held only my 804 and saved the money on the upgrade!! Turns out, it makes more sense to decode the HD audio formats in the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player, as it can handle the mixing of the various channels better, then can send a single mixed bit-stream to the receiver. The HD/Blu-Ray player does this over HDMI 1.3, as it needs the bandwidth to send this audio. The older HDMI 1.1 does not support this, so the 804 would not be able to do this. However, I could do this via the Analog inputs to the receiver, so that would have been a workaround. Anyways, that is all a moot point, as I've purchased it now! If you have not updated your AVR in a long time, this is a great future-proofed upgrade. However, if you have an AVR from the last couple of years, you could probably hold off.

Weaknesses: Heavy. There is an annoying several second delay when switching sources.
Summary: I bought this to upgrade from a very good but 14 year old Yamaha. I am very impressed with the improvement in the surround sound using the same setup otherwise. The Audyssey channel calibration is good but takes a while to perform. The setup is pretty intuitive and the instructions are reasonably informative. The Unit is heavy and generates a lot of heat so you need to consider that when planning your Home Theater.

Weaknesses: Large size and heavy.
Summary: This is a stellar amp. I did alot of research and arrived at this amp. I don't think you will find a better one for the money. The sound quality on the surround is spectacular! There are many listening options to suit the most particular listener. Even at extreme volume, you will still listen to music, not hear it. I am using Polk in wall and in ceiling speakers with a Polk powered sub. My old Kenwood didn't drive the sub like this one. I was always adjusting the output of the sub for different cd's, I haven't touched it since I hooked up the Onkyo and used the audessy speaker set up mic.

Weaknesses: Only 1 subwoofer connection
Summary: Okay - I bought this received to replace my old Sony and to work with my new Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players. I wanted to take advantage of the new Tru-HD and other HD formats as well as being able to hookup everything through HDMI connections. Well 2 hours later and I switched it on! One caveat - this is a BEAST! Be sure to have a friend to carry the box and lift it out - its big and heavy. Some have expressed concern over the heat it generates so I placed it in a location that would provide plenty of ventilation. Anyway, the sound is nothing short of spectacular! I watched Casino Royale and Batman Begins and felt like I was in the movie theater. Every sound is reproduced with perfection - whether its an explosion or a soft whisper. If you want a great received for state of the art capability I highly recommend this unit. The only shortcoming for some may be the single subwoofer connection. It seems to be in vogue to use 2 subs but I have not been concerned with this and so it wasn't an issue for me. Enjoy!!

Weaknesses: Loose HDMI Ports. Heavy @ 60 back breaking pounds. Remote too busy. No OSD with HDMI out. Loud clicking noise when switching inputs.
Summary: This is the one to beat in the price to performance ratio. Great build quality with high quality parts. All kinds of bells and whistles for calibrations including the Audyssey auto audio calibrator. For 7/5 channel HT, this is very very nice. Big loud and controlled sound without much distortion even at high volume. For stereo music, this not a bad receiver but not as good as dedicated separates with high quality toroidal transformers that are stable to 2 ohms. Clarity not great at low volumes levels but acceptable. Sounds a little warm for my taste. May be it is my speakers don't know. No OSD out with the monitor set to HDMI. I don't know if it is a bug. Remote is a bit busy and looks a bit bland for my taste. Bottom line - All in all a great all round performer sure to please all but hard core audiophiles.

Strengths: Loaded with function
Weaknesses: It's huge (might not be a real weakness anyway)
Summary: I upgraded to 805 from 605. 605 works fine for movies but I feel its amp is bit weak. I did some research and found out that 805 has a much better power and amp section than 605 and is really reasonably priced now. I grabbed one and never regretted. It has most function you want for a sub-1k receiver sans 1080p up-scaling. That doesnt bother me at all as my dvd player does that for me. The one function that I really wish it has is internet radio. Btw, this receiver is more than 50lbs and taller than most regular ones. You'd better measure your cabinet to make sure it will fit before hauling this monster home.
