Strengths: excellent image and mounting bracket; came with a pouch and AC adaptor; volume control; option of having the map such that North is up
Weaknesses: customization of route; outdated map; slow to ?boot up? and to acquire signal
Summary: The first day, one end of the pouch carry strap came loose but Nextar will not replace the pouch. The unit includes a touch-pen that is conveniently stored in the unit, but the manual does not identify the pen in its diagram. Customer Support kindly lead me to the pen. I have not found the menu to be very intuitive. Roads that were altered or new five years ago are not known. Route options include quickest, shortest, major for maximum usage of major roads, and local for maximum usage of local roads. However, shortest does not route the shortest route, and even routes a long indirect way. If you want part of your route to take you through specific towns or intersections, you will have to use what Nextar calls ?stopovers?. The unit treats each ?stopover? as an interim destination. Therefore, when approaching a stopover, the unit announces that the ?destination? is x feet ahead ?on the left? (or ?right?), which is nonsense because it is an intersection, and uses left/right regardless of which way I need to turn. What I need to know is whether to prepare for and make a left or right turn, but it never tells me. AFTER I complete the stopover turn, the unit then asks whether I want to continue to my next destination (stopover or final). I am too busy steering and watching traffic to take time to answer the question, so either my passenger has to do this or I have to pull off to the side of the road. Once I reach my final destination and I want to return via the same route, the unit does not have the ?stopovers? stored, so the entire route has to be re-constructed (in reverse order). This ?stopover? function is very poor. The unit needs a ?via? function so one can have a SINGLE destination ?via? however many intersections are necessary, and then ALL turns would be announced, and done so in advance. I do not know whether other navigation GPS have better functionality, but I would return this unit except that now it is an ?open? box and not returnable. Also, while traveling along on my route, the unit suddenly shows me out in a pasture or on a different road, and shows me gradually returning to the road I am on.
