Strengths: Excellent packaging, Good quality, 1080P upconverting
Weaknesses: Price, Does not support High Definition DivX videos
Summary: I bought this product two weeks ago. It was really expensive comparing to the other DVD players. After all it is not an HD-DVD player. But I was really disappointed when I figured out it does nor support high definition DivX movies. I have a lot of series in DivX format on DVD's and cannot watch many of them.

Strengths: Hard-pressed to find a player supporting more formats at this price, great video, great audio, superior packaging, simple but effective.
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: I purchased this DVD player to replace one that set me back more than 10x the price to free up some cash for other things and I don't regret it in the slightest. Don't be fooled, this is NOT an HD player. Your upconverted DVDs will not look like a quality HD-DVD or a Blu-Ray disc, but you can rest assured you will get a great picture out of your older movies. Setup was remarkably simple, especially thanks to the fact that Oppo sees fit to include an HDMI cable. We have watched quite a few movies and listened to a few CDs at this point and couldn't be happier. This is a fantastic player for anyone looking to improve on their existing DVDs, and a true bargain if you also happen to have any SACD or DVD-Audio.

Strengths: Beautiful picture quality and sound. Very easy to set up.
Weaknesses: no sd/memory card slot for viewing pictures (does have a USB slot though)
Summary: Very high quality upscaling DVD player without the $300-$400 price tag. Yes, this DVD player is more expensive than the ones you see at Best Buy or Circuit City, almost $100 more expensive. But the difference in quality from this Oppo 980H and an entry level (sub $100 player) is very noticeable. First the picture quality of the upscaled image is amazing. Almost (I said almost) as good looking as an HD DVD, depending on what DVD you are playing). It upscales all the way up to 1080p. I am running it on a 37" Aquos 720p set and it looks fantastic. The sound quality is also top notch, supporting up to 7.1 sound. It has speaker jacks built in, so if for some reason you don't have a receiver and just have speakers (?), you can still enjoy up to 7.1 surround sound. The set up was very easy, I tried tweaking the factory settings a bit for the image, but the factory settings were better than anything I came up with messing around with them. The OSD (on screen display) is very easy to navigate and use. With every option very easily found. A nice feature, I thought anyway, was if you press the info button during playback, it will shrink down the image and display all the vital data about what is being played, the image quality it is being displayed in, the title, chapter and so on. Nice touch. Another nice touch is the bookmark feature, that actually works. Stop a DVD in the middle of playback, and it automatically saves the position stopped at. Take it out, put another one in, come back later with the original one, and it will resume playback where you left off. My $200 Toshiba upscaling DVD player couldn't do that. The remote is functional, nothing really fancy or unique about it, I am using my Harmony remote with it and it works great with the player. All in all, there are more expensive DVD players out there, and there are cheaper ones as well, but for the money, this is the best option I feel that is out there right now. It comes with an HDMI cable included, setup is easy, picture and sound quality are on par with the upper tier players and it supports about every known format that can be put on a DVD/CD known to man.

Strengths: Plays all convetional formats
Weaknesses: None
Summary: This player is to take advantage of my 42" HD LCD TV. The major criteria for my choice of the DVD player is its ability to play SACD and DVD Audio, raw Mpeg and DivX files, which this player does flawlessly. The sound quality is excellent as well as the picture. The front USB connector is very handy. I didn't test it with external hard drive though. All my previous players were in the same capabilities category (Samsung 841 and Onkyo 502). OPPO adds HDMI connectivity which others lack. Setup is very easy (my manual is still sealed in the box). I like the screen background, but menu fonts could be more attractive. Simple tweak can turn it into multi-region player capable to handle European PAL DVDs.

Strengths: Costs less than Blu-Ray if you are not ready to upgrade .
Weaknesses: The cost , I got mine for $169.00 at Amazon .
Summary: Great Standard Definition player .Back panel has most of the same outputs as a Blu- Ray player .Easy to use and connect .I use mine with a Sony STR-DA5300ES 7.1 Receiver Upconversion is great also . If you are not ready to switch to a Blu-Ray player ( movies still priced too high ) then this player is for you .
