Strengths: 1080p upconvert, HDMI support, USB port

Weaknesses: Remote, not showing long file name

Summary: Great player. Easily make it region free. Play avi (MPEG1, MPEG2, DivX3~ 6) files from external hard driver directly, you need to format the hard drive into Fat 32. The picture is so clear when using HDMI cable upconverting an ordinary DVD to 720P or 1080i. Haven?t tried 1080P because my LCD TV doesn?t support 1080P. But the HDMI cable is not included, you need buy one. It doesn?t have S-video, some people may still need it. The remote works ok, but not as good as the machine.

Strengths: DivX, 1080p upconversion, USB

Weaknesses: Not user friendly, no optical digital out

Summary: This player is an excellent value for the money. The reviews about the slow load times almost made me not buy this player, but I haven't seen that. The player is not user friendly, because a lot of features that reviewers are saying are not on this player actually are. You have to read the user manual to figure out how to enable/disable some of them.

Strengths: USB support, reads divx files, avi files without any issue, quality is excellent.

Weaknesses: Remote can be designed in a better way. There is no stop button and no fast forward or rewind button. Just forward skip and backward skip button

Summary: Very nice product to have. Play all divx movies. For the price this is a very good product. If the remote had been designed a bit better it would have been an even better product. very very satisfied with the product.

Strengths: Multifunctional, price, dimentsions, reliable

Weaknesses: Remote (but for this price?)

Summary: I guess it is classic model for usual customer. I had previous model and I was satisfied with it, but I bought a new TV and I need a new HD player. I use this unit and for DivX and for other sources and I have no problems with sound or image.

Strengths: Play divx movies! Play dvd-rw! Play USB hard disks! 1080p upconverting!

Weaknesses: USB 1.1 only. Unable to play high bit rate movies. Short file names only

Summary: This is a good product from philips that is quite affordable. The best of all, is that it can play movies in a USB hard disk or flash driver directly. That is very cool. The movie can just be the divx movies and it can play. I have also tried dvd-rw discs. One old brand cannot be played. One newer brand (imatation) can be played. The problem is of course the USB connection is USB 1.1 only. Therefore it won't be able to play the high bit rate movies. Also the file names in the hard disk become 8.3 short names. It's kind of mess.

Strengths: Dirt cheap ($60), performs well

Weaknesses: Remote control leaves much to be desired

Summary: Bought this for $60 online, it does the job well and the 1080p upconverted picture is much better than you get on most 480p progressive scan DVD players. It's also really tiny and small, and fits easily on top of your cable box. Not much to really say about his player but that it works and for $60 it's quite the bargain.A couple of weaknesses: the remote is really bad and the keys stick (but if you use a universal remote then this isn't an issue). Also the LCD display on the DVD player is kind of random and cheap, but again, the HD upconverted picture more than makes up for this.

Strengths: Plays almost everything, upconvert to 1080P

Weaknesses: remote controller is the weakest link in Philips DVD line.

Summary: Very slim form factor, nice design. Plays any media, USB connector accepted hard drive formated in FAT32 with external power without any problem, Easy to make region free. remote control design is terrible, looking to substitute it with any other.... recommended buy. DIVX dream play...

Strengths: Played anything I threw in it, upconversion, USB port!

Weaknesses: horrible remote

Summary: I have been very happy with this player since upgrading from an older Toshiba. PQ is far better on my HDTV than the old player. USB works flawlessly. Highly recommended!

Strengths: Can play via USB, HDMI support, Divx support

Weaknesses: None I found till now

Summary: This one has a USB port on the front which is a great advantage. Although its not mentioned that it can play Divx format from USB, but it does pretty well. The display is excellent. The remote has a USB Button, which toggles between the USB device and the DVD.It has big display considered others in the same range. Another advantage is that it supports NTSC as well as PAL system. Also some sites have region-free hack. So you could gift this to your friends / family overseas.Does not have universal power supply (only works on 110V)so a power coverter is needed if using outside US.

Strengths: DivX, HDMI, 1080p Upscaling, USB port

Weaknesses: Remote

Summary: I wasn't ready to commit to true high definition DVD players with the two current competing formats, so this DVD player suits my needs for now. I primarily purchased this unit for the USB port. Before I got this unit, I would convert downloaded content on my PC to a DVD format to play in my previous DVD player. Now I simply drag the content from my PC onto a USB thumb drive and this DVD player plays the content in its native format; no need to convert it! This saves me a lot a time and the convenience of using a USB drive versus a DVD-RW. My only gripe about this unit is with the cheap remote control. There's no eject button on the remote, instead you need to hold down the STOP button for about 3 seconds to eject a disc. Overall, I recommend this DVD player.

Strengths: cheap, light, and small.

Weaknesses: not include HDMI cable, not 1080p :)

Summary: Based on the buyer review, I chose this DVP5982/37 DVD Player although it is not a full HD DVD player. This is so light and small, moreover reasonable price. But, it has a delay to turn on and off. I like... 1. Size - small and thin 2. Compatibility - you can play almost every file type 3. Convenience - connect external hard drive or your computer directly through USB cable. 4. Quality - Video quality is great 5. Price - reasonable I don't like... 1. not a full HD DVD player (1080i) 2. diffult to turn on and off 3. delay to play DVDs 4. doesn't play several DVDs

Strengths: Decent up-converted pictures to 1080p.

Weaknesses: Variable manufacturing quality.

Summary: I got the unit from Costco bundled with HDMI cable and so I have everything needed to hook up with my new HDTV out of the box. Picture improvement over conventional component DVD player at 480p is quite noticeable. You can definitely see jagged edges smoothen out in up-converted picture vs standard component DVDs, especially when you watch animated films like the Disney Cars. However, I did have problem with the first unit I obtained which gave a very noticeable blue tint and dark picture. I exchanged it with another unit and problem is gone, so I suspect QA on the unit is not as best as can be. Otherwise at $65 this is a good bargain for a decent up-scaling DVD player prior for your jump to HD-DVD or blueray. The slim form factor of the player also make it easy for me to fit it between components in my existing entertainment rack. This is a pleasant surprise since I was planning to just put the player just next to TV.The onscreen display is a bit clumsy to use. If you want to see remaining/elapsed time for chapter/title, you have to switch to an info screen with picture shrunk to less than half the screen size so you can't have the informational display overlay on movie when playing. Also toggling between remaining time/elapsed time is take more than a few keys stroke. The unit does have a front display with show the current time selection which more or less compensate for the lack of onscreen overlay.

Strengths: USB Port, Upscaling, Small Form Factor

Weaknesses: Limited Function Remote, Can't Display Long Names in Menu

Summary: Let start by saying that you can probably find better DVD players on the market, but at this price range this is probably the most versatile. It will upscale your standard 480 DVDs to 1080p and they look pretty decent. We're not talking HD or Blue Ray here, but better than normal viewing. The next big feature is the USB port located on the front of the unit. You can play Divx (avi) from your flash drive or FAT 32 formated external hard drive. One drawback - you cannot display long file names, so you'll have to watch how you name your files. Just a minor annoyance in my book, but there never the less. Also, the remote for this player leaves a lot to be desired. It's very small in the hand and lacks all the functionality of a full sized remote. But, for the price, this player is hard to beat.

Strengths: Sleek style

Weaknesses: Poor remote, HDMI cable not included

Summary: I bought this for my bedroom to use on my 19 in LCD TV. Unfortunately the HDMI cable was not included and the HDMI cable is required to upscale to 1080p or even 720p. This is ridiculous because component cables are capable of running resolutions up to 1080i, and the fact that I am not able to afford an HDMI cable is frustrating. I cannot judge the picture quality of an upscaled image until I find a cheap cable. But other than the lack of the HDMI cable, I am quite satisfied.
