Strengths: Plays everything, 1080p upconversion, USB 2.0, HDMI

Weaknesses: Doesn't support long file names over USB :(

Summary: I was about to buy an Oppo 970HD when I heard about this new Philips player. Found it at BB for $69, so I took a chance. I'm glad I did.PROS: cheap, upconverts to 1080p, HDMI output, very good picture quality (Mediatek chipset), black finish, slim, plays everything (including NTSC/PAL), USB 2.0 port (media must be formatted as FAT32), plays divx files, supports Dolby-Digital and DTS passthru (even though it isn't mentioned in the manual), adjustable audio sync, easily hackable to be region free, screen saver, firmware upgrades.CONS: doesn't support long file names over USB, doesn't support HD divx files, no optical audio out (only coax/rca), remote is kind of cheap, menus are a little unintuitive, doesn't seem to have an "upconversion-over-component" hack available yet (like the DVP5960).To sum up, if you don't need optical out and can get around the annoyance of short file names over USB, this player is terrific! Who knows, maybe Philips will release a firmware to fix these minor issues (fingers crossed).BTW, if you add a FAT32 formatted HD, it becomes a pretty decent poor man's home theater PC. A BIG thumbs up!!

Strengths: Excellent picture quality via HDMI. Very affordable. Takes up little space.

Weaknesses: Flimsy construction. Menu's style very out of date.

Summary: In laymen's terms, the DVP5982/37 has saved my DVD collection. I can view my 480i DVD collection at 1080i resolution and the result is nothing less than stunning, especially at a close range of 3 feet from the screen. I did have some initial problems pairing the DVP5982/37 to my Sony Bravia. If the player detects that your monitor is not HDCP compliant, it will stop working. In my case it was detecting improperly, but after some tech support (live people) and setting changes, I'm up and running at 1080i. I love this thing.

Strengths: stylish design, HDMI output, 1080p, USB 2.0, supporting NTSC/PAL, hackable to region free.

Weaknesses: Not supporting long file name, cheap design for remote

Summary: Overall speaking, it is a very cool basic DVD player, and I like it very much. It plays almost everything (of course, no HD-DVD), with decent picture quality. Its supporting USB is another attractive feature. Best of all, it is easy to hack it into region free so that I don't need to switch players for my imported DVDs. The relatively low price is anothing a strong plus. Recommended!

Strengths: Upscaling, 1080P, HDMI, USB.

Weaknesses: Remote.

Summary: This player is fantastic - everything I wanted in a player, it has. It plays everything, CDs, DVDs, JPEGs, Divx, Xvids, NTSC, PAL, you name it. The front USB 2.0 port allows you to play any supported file without first burning a CD/DVD. Any self-powered USB drive/disk should work, and I haven't found one that hasn't. The menus and options are detailed and intuitive. The only downside is the small remote. I highly recommend this player.

Strengths: Great upconverter. Stylish exterior. Can be made region free. Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Puny remote.

Summary: The Philips DVP5982 is a great little DVD player for the price. I picked it up for $66 at Best Buy for my new 42" 1080P philips TV and it works flawlessly. I've triied a variety of shows. Old shows like Magnum, 90's show's like Bab 5, recent shows like 24, and all sorts of anime in the last week. It converted all those shows fantastically. I haven't tried the USB functionality yet but I plan to. Also, the player can be made region free. The only thing wrong might be that it had a small remote and I find the most used buttons sometimes stick. But I'm about to program my Harmony 676 for this DVD player so I shouldn't have that problem much longer. Otherwise, there are no issues. It's a fantastic player for the cost.

Strengths: Plays tons of video and audio formats, including divx and divx ultra, will read just about any disc thrown at it, has USB port to read files, cheap, nice black styling, HDMI, etc.

Weaknesses: No S-Video, no optical audio port, cheap remote, slow start up time, only remembers last position of five last movies played, divx subtitles have strange background

Summary: This is easily the best budget DVD player available, period. It's available at some retailers as low as $60. It plays all my divx files, divx ultra, MP3, and more from just about any type of disc (CD-R, DVD+R, etc.). Additionally, there is a USB port on the front (despite hype, it only transfers at USB 1.1 rates, not 2.0) that will read flash drives and some hard drives. It's a great option to view digital photos, listen to music or watch divx movies without having to burn a disc. Thankfully, Philips ditched the silver color scheme and went for black. This is also one of the few budget plays that has an HDMI port, and will upscale as high as 1080p. You can customize the minimal LCD display, and the firmware is upgradable. Using an easy to find trick, you can also make t his DVD player region free. PAL to NTSC conversion is excellent as well. There are some drawbacks though. There is no S-Video output, so you either have to go with composite, component, or HDMI. There is a coaxial digital out for audio, but no optical which is a little annoying. The bundled remote has buttons that stick a bit when pushed, and doesn't have enough buttons for all this DVD player can do. Start up time is about fifteen seconds which seems a bit long. Also, it only remembers your last play point for the last five movies you've watched. Divx subtitles also have a slightly transparent background around them, for ease of reading I suppose, but I find it annoying. The DVD tray might also be a bit flimsy for some people, but I like it since it keeps the unit ultra slim. This is easily the best sub-$100 DVD player available. It will play some movies that won't play properly on other DVDs, and it will play any homemade things you throw at it. If you only buy one DVD player before you go HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, this is the way to go.

Weaknesses:

Summary: I have a Sharp Aquos 1080p LCD TV. Before I bought this DVD player I have a 480p DVD/VCR combo. The image quality is poor when I play DVD on it. But I don't want spend couple hundred dollars on blu-ray dvd player. DVP5982 got a pretty good price along with a USB input. I have been searching this kind of dvd player in the market for quite some time and this is just I have been waiting for. The upconverted picture quality is excellent. I strongly recommend this for people what to have good picture quality but also the price.

Strengths: Good video quality with HDMI Cable, Upscaling to 10180P, Reads almost all kind of media, USB support

Weaknesses: bad video when USB port is used, Many hard drives which have two usb ports can not be read, navigation menu on remote is not great

Summary: If you don't want to spend large bucks on HD dvd player and need nice quality when you upconvert, this is the right one for you. For best output use HDMI Cable. The video quality is poor when USB port is used. USB port is not compatible with many external HDD with two usb port requirements. The USB port can be used for still pictures on your jump drive.

Strengths: Slick lightweight design, USB port, many formats accepted, ability to upgrade Firmware, upconversion to 1080p

Weaknesses: Remote - no Eject button and very basic, slow operations (power, eject etc.)

Summary: I bought this DVD player to upconvert to 720P signal which my new digital TV can take. The picture quality is OK, I can not make out huge difference between 480p and 720p on my TV but 720P signal is little better then using component video which gives me 480p.There is no eject button on the remote. Both power and eject operations takes little while, in particular eject takes @ 30 seconds to eject. This is annoying. The sound settings are many but I could not find any of them useful.Overall the player is just good only. I have not played other format to try but for just DVDs to upconvert it is OK. I paid only $60 and it came with HDMI cable and so for the price I paid the player is good.

Strengths: Upconversion to 1080p, slim design, compatible with DivX, USB file can also be played directly

Weaknesses: Slow human interface response

Summary: It is the latest version of Philips DVD DivX 1080p upconverison player. Its 1080p upconversion is very good when you play your 480p DVD movie. Your movie on large scrren TV will be equal or better than the HD TV quality. For DivX file, the 1080p conversion doesn't improve the video quality much. The small size of the player is quite impressive too. However, the response of human interface is pretty slow. When you press a key, it takes quite while for the machine to response. I guesss it is because Philips uses an very old micropressor when they write the firmware. The output has nothing but HDMI and RCA 3 ports, video, left and right channel. So you have to use a good receiver if you want fancy sound effects that can decode the HDMI audio signals into mutliple channles.
