Strengths: Good signal, which is the reason I purchased it. My husband can now get a good signal anywhere in the house (which has plaster walls) with his laptop. Couldn't before.

Weaknesses: None really -- see comment below.

Summary: The only slight negative (not really a negative) is that the Air Port Extreme takes a few seconds to connect. My computer (an iMac) scans for a few seconds before it connects. So if I unsleep my computer I find I need to wait several seconds before hitting "Get Mail." If I don't wait, it says "can't find server" or something similar. This was not the case with my former router.

Strengths: Best looking network equipment; strong, stable, reliable wireless signal; combines wireless and wired network routing; enables network access of printer and hard drive through USB; PC compatible

Weaknesses: Can not access A band and B/G bands simultaneously

Summary: Only Apple seems to understand that consumer technology products can be both functional AND beautifully designed. I'm not quite sure why this is... Nevertheless, you can expect both great performance and elegant design to come with your Airport Extreme wireless router.

Strengths: N network speed. Easy setup. Printer and hard drive server.

Weaknesses: Does not support port triggering.

Summary: This is the best router I have ever owned (I have 16 old ones sitting in my closet). I set it up in about 30 mins total. 2 macs and 1 pc on the network. All work great no problems. I have a harddrive and a printer hooked up at once with a usb hub. I opted out of installing the bornjour drivers on my xp machine and decided to do it manually. Only took 3 mins or so and was up and running on xp no problem, no extra drivers needed. Check this link for how i did it. http://tech.ifelix.net/1004.htmlThe macs just worked nothing to install. Also I get full bars all through my house now where as before my back bedroom was a dead zone. Only draw back is this does not support port triggering for bittorrent. But it does have port forwarding so i just used that.Moral of the story spend the little extra money on this one and you will be happy. and if you are running windows dont install bornjor it's not needed and just messes things up.

Strengths: Used to be great now a paper weight only wired parts work

Weaknesses: Wireless slowly fails then goes away completely

Summary: Long list of problems that apple won't fix. Go to http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1222416&tstart=0 and make your own choice! Mine stated to drop out a lot then set it on it's side (overheating?) Now after 7 months it is just dead. Wireless does not work at all. Works great as a wired router switch!

Strengths: 802.11n, decent software, good features

Weaknesses: AirDisk over WAN doesn't workCost

Summary: This is a solid router at the usual Apple premium. The price gets you a good router with software that is impressive. You can monitor quite a few stats including signal parameters for individual wireless clients etc. The features match and in some cases exceed the other 802.11n routers out there. However, AirDisk is a pain if you aren't using a Mac and even worse if you aren't the same network. I have been unable to setup AirDisk (which also doesn't support NTFS) to be accesible over a WAN with either a Mac or PC.

Strengths: Easy to install, consistent signal, no dropped signal issues when up/downloading large files.

Weaknesses: No web interface, must use apple's software to access the device, price, only outputs 300mbps when dedicated N.

Summary: This Apple AirPort Extreme Wireless Gateway has been pretty reliable to-date. The setup software is very easy to use once you get used to the idea of actually having to install software to manage a consumer based router on your desktop/laptop just to do anything with it. I highly recommend this product because of the reliability issues I've had with other Draft-N routers, this one is yet to drop a signal, and living in NYC, interference isn't an issue yet either with the Airport.

Strengths: Exceptionally easy to set up and connect. Small size. Additional USB port. Long distance signal.

Weaknesses: none

Summary: Each time Apple recreates it's base station, it gets better and this time is no exception. You can print to multiple printers wirelessly due to the addition of ports. Its speed is noticable improved and doesn't slow down your internet connection. The strength of the signal is more than adequate. I have a 3000 sq. ft house and can connect anywhere in the house, in the basement, upstairs and in the yard. AIrport Utility App lets you even reconfigure or chage the password through the wireless connection. This is a definite plus when you are not near the base station but need to play around with its settings such as change the security settings or change its channel for better reception. As with anything apple makes, it effortlessly hooks up to your mac. All you do is plug the internet connection inot the airport, plug the airport into the wall, plug the printer into the airport, and let AIrPort Set-Up Utility handle the rest just by answering a few questions, in minutes you are hooked up but wire free! Couldn't be easier!!!!

Strengths: Nice small size, exceptional signal strength. Easy to set-up

Weaknesses: None

Summary: This new shape is much sleeker and more contemporary and makes it easier to fit on a desk or bookshelf. The flat book like shape even allows for you to stack other peripherals such as a set of small speakers on it. The signal strength is exceptional and goes through walls with out blockage . The signal covers my whole house. The signal strength is also very consistent. The extra ports are a plus. The USB port can be used to connect a printer, external hard drive or another peripheral. It has three ethernet ports for connecting computers or networks. The set-up instructions are easy to follow and everything can be connected an working in less than 5 minutes.

Strengths: Design is slick and neat. Easy to set up with Macintosh computers, a bit less easy with PCs. Can share a USB printer over the wireless network.

Weaknesses: Only has three ethernet ports, so not good if the network will have several non-wireless computers or ethernet printers. Instructions for PC setup could have been better.

Summary: The absence of visable antennae (unlike the LinkSys products) made me skeptical that the device would have sufficient range, but I was pleasantly surprised that it did seem to extend the full 150 feet as stated in the specs and did so through walls.

Strengths: Speed, Ease of Setup, Apple SImplicity and Design

Weaknesses: Range not as long as expected, Issues with included CDs, Price

Summary: I bought this router to replace my dying router. I was looking for a something that would work with my multiple PCs and MAC. Using my MAC I wirelessly configured the router within literally 15 minutes - probably the quickest and easiest in all the routers that I have used (20+ routers). Within the next 15 minutes I was able to wireless print using my HP 3390 (using the router's built-in USB port). Over my wireless G router, I definitely see a speed increase (with my MAC and PC laptops with G and N adapters). However, I did not see a increase in range as I was expecting - its about the same as the longest range of the routers - however this also might be due to environmental factors rather than a ding against the router. While a small thing, something that seemed is odd is the fact that the included CD doesnt work. It seems to hang all the MACs and PCs I use it on - the computers just keep on trying to read the CD and just hangs. Overall while I think the router is a little over priced - I think it might be worth it for the ease of setup (hassle-free / its just works), the increase in the speed and the overall performance of the router (I rank it as one of the better routers I have used in the years).

Strengths: Much faster speeds and better range

Weaknesses: None

Summary: This is the third router i bought in two month period. The other routers were D-Link and Belkin. I love the apple the best. Flawless software setup for PC. Got it up and working in just few moments. Though a little pricey, worth every penny.

Strengths: Very simple to configureExcellent speedFirmware upgradableSupported by a reputable manufacturer with a vested interest in maintaining compatibility with the 802.11n standard

Weaknesses: Configuration can be troublesomeHave to restart the router after just about any configuration changeNo web based configurationAdvanced options difficult to configure

Summary: Replaced an old 802.11g router from DLink with the Airport Extreme Base Station from Apple. I have mostly Mac hardware so I decided it would be nice to stick with stuff that would work well together. For the most part, I'm happy with the choice. I had a great deal of difficulty configuring the router initially due to a bad password that I had entered for my PPPoE-based ISP. Unfortunately the router did not tell me the password was bad, instead it rejected all login attempts and forced me to reset it to factory settings five times before I figured out the password was bad and put the correct one in. This kind of a diagnostic reporting oversight was surprising to me coming from such a human/computer interface oriented company like Apple. Once I got the router configured correctly, things worked very well. I have a 500 GB Western Digital USB2 drive connected to it as an AirDisk and have had no trouble at all accessing the disk from my Mac machines or from Windows (and at 802.11n Draft 2.0 speeds, the data is moving pretty quickly too).I hope that this router ends up being upgradable to support the final 802.11n standard if and when that comes out (and obviously that it will allow the router to run at speeds closer to the promises of 802.11n - 300 Mbps instead of 130 Mbps).

Strengths: n router.Very easy to setup if you are starting a new wireless setup.USB port with HUB support

Weaknesses: The trick comes in play when replacing existing router with this one.Not enough instructions for such replacementYou can not set the router IP as you want.

Summary: I was having an existing network with a D-Link router. The new AEBS was replacing the D-Link.The router setup was easy overall, but there are certain restrictions. You can not use n mode and have 128-bit WEP security. You have to switch to b/g mode then only you can see that option. This is important when you are replacing the router in the existing network. Now if you have some n clients in the network, then you are not taking advantage of n capability of this router by changing this mode. You can of course use the 13 character ASCII value, but that means changing password of all your clients.I could not find an option to change IP address of AEBS, it always defaults to nnn.nnn.nnn.1 as per your DHCP base.I would say overall an OK router.May be the legacy machines on your network might dictate the WEP key only configuration and then you have to work around. If this is not the case, then the WPA/WPA2 is the best bet.I have yet to explore the functionality of the USB port and its hub support. But I did not see HUB support in any other router (at least mentioned in spec or manual) inlcuding the newest WRT600N from Linksys.

Strengths: Great range and speed, set up software slick and easy to use

Weaknesses: Bonjour networked printer on MS XP giving problems

Summary: Unlike the alien looking contraption from industry leader Linksys, the draft-N router is a tidy little box. The administration tools are very easy to set up and use. Everything works as advertised on Macs, but I have run in to problems printing to my networked printer via Windows XP. No sure where the fault lies, but something to keep in mind. Unlike most of the competition, the Airport also has a built in USB port. You can attach a USB hub and connect multiple devices, such as a USB printer and external hard drive, and then connect wirelessly. Pretty slick.Price is comparable to other draft-N routers out there. One unique feature on the Airport is that it can optionally operate in 5GHz mode. Microwave ovens, cordless phones and all wireless routers work in the 2.4GHz spectrum, and interference causes drop outs and slow connections. The Airport can be switched from the default 2.4GHz mode to 5GHZ mode, bypassing all that interference. A great feature for apartment dwellers.
