Strengths: Has everything you may need to print-scan-copy
Weaknesses: Bulky; questionable software supplied; cumbersome film scanner
Summary: One of not-so-many AIO photo printers, that also scans films, and one of the best available for the price. Quality of scans/prints is good to excellent, speed ,easiness of use and network support make this AIO very good addition to your home office. On the downside: this device is somewhat bulky and heavy; enclosed software is not well designed and film scanner may not suit your needs well- the process of film change is very lengthy and cumbersome.

Strengths: scans, copies and prints at a great price, can be hooked up to a router for use over a network
Weaknesses: no fax, slightly unusual set-up for network use, when using the copy function, the top can be slightly cut off.
Summary: I purchased the Canon Pixma 970 in Dec 2007 to replace a HP Photosmart Printer that was 6.5 years old and did not work with Vista. The Canon Pixma series has received good reviews but did not have network capability which I wanted because we have multiple PC with different Operating Systems. Then I saw the new MP970 and it had the ability to hook up to a LAN router. I did not want FAX capability so that was not a weakness for me (although it might be for others.) To hook it up to the network you actually have to hook it up to a PC first then then connect it to the router. A little unusual but since my main PC ans my router are close together it was not an issue and was easy to do. It's been working great ever since. I can print to it using my Vista desktop or my XP desktop. When I scan something, I can chose the destination PC to send the scan. The copy function works in both black and white or in color. I have noticed that if I put the source paper right up against the edges of the glass, some text can be cut off on the top - I'm not sure if the printer just can print that close to the edge or what. But I just position the source material differently.I was able to get this printer for under $150 after tax and $100 rebate through Circuit City. I think that's a great price.I am very happy with the printer and would recommend it to anyone looking for a network printer that can print, scan and copy.

Strengths: AIO printer with supreme quality of outputs
Weaknesses: Bulky, expensive
Summary: Canon makes good printers and has been eating up the market share of HP. Canon PIXMA MP970 does it again. This AIO printer can outperform any HP or Epson AIO printers in the same class. The color of photo printing is accurate. The monochrome printing is laser-like quality. The only downside is the printer is very bulky. Yes, did I mention it is very bulky? Make sure you have enough room for this monster.

Strengths: All-in-one printer with no-compromise quality in all functions
Weaknesses: Big and heavySuper expensive ink
Summary: This AIO printer consists of all the high-end functions- photo printing, B/W text printing, and high-resolution scanning. Despite packed functionalities, it is quite easy to use. The included software is massive, but works well once fully installed. The pigment black ink produces laser-printer like quality. The 6-color color photo printign produces great pictures. However, once should be aware of turning on or off all the Automatic Color adjustment along the "chain." I found that turning off the color adjustment feature on the printer produces the best result. The networking function works quite well too.Downside is that: this is big.

Strengths: Print speed, quiet mode, 2 separate feed trays.
Weaknesses: Large all in one, 26 lbs.
Summary: Replaced an HP 4180 that died with this Pixma. After reading the reviews and finding a deal with a 100 dollar rebate thought I could not go wrong. Overall am pleased with the printer but am not crazy as others are with photo quality. Could be the paper I am using but I have Kodak ultimate paper and using the settings suggested by Canon's website. The HP did a fantastic job with photo printing. Only problem with the Pixma is they do not look very glossy. Can't give the printer a bad rating until I try Canon paper. Overall as I say am very pleased with the printer. Very nice to have 2 feed trays, keep the photo paper in the back and regular in the tray. Printer auto changes depending on what your printer settings are. Can change manually also.

Strengths: Network interface, exceptional photos, prints, copies, and scans
Weaknesses: memory card reader does not work over the network interface with Mac OS X
Summary: The MP970 is an exceptional all-in-one device with an Ethernet interface. Pictures, graphics, and text are all excellent. The copier and scanner are easy to use. The only fault is the memory card reader does not work over the network with Mac OS X. I hope this will be fixed in a future version of the driver. The network driver installation is complicated, and you must follow the directions precisely. Fortunately, installation mistakes are easy to correct.

Strengths: Picture quality, speed, direct printing from camera or memory card, dual paper trays, great value with $100 rebate.
Weaknesses: Large size.
Summary: I was trying to decide which photo printer to buy for a long time. This was always one of my top choices but could not get myself to buy since the price was $200+. There's currently a $100 Canon rebate for it and that makes it less than $150 in most places. For that price you cannot get anything as good and versatile as the MP970. Short of printing in large formats, this printer can do pretty much everything a photo "center" should do. Scanning, copying, and printing of pictures/film were what I was looking for. It performs very well in all those functions. What I use it for the most is in printing photos and you will not be disappointed with the picture quality. I have only use "plus" glossy photo paper of various brands and they all turn out very well. No one can tell that it was printed by an inkjet. Ink use seems to be pretty efficient and I have not had to change any ink tanks yet. Printed over hundred photos so far. I would estimate the ink cost per 4x6 print to be somewhere between 7 to 9 cents per photo. Add some good deals on photo paper and you can print for between 12 and 20 cents per 4x6. About the same cost as outside services but without the hassle of sending the pics out and also you have better control over the print quality. If you're looking for a great photo printer that won't disappoint, buy this before the rebate expires.

Strengths: Fast, Software Bundle, Easy Network Setup, 7 Individual Ink Cartridges, Energy Efficient, Direct CD/DVD Print, Duplex Printing, Dual Paper Feed, 4800x9600 Scanner, 3.5" color LCD, 1 Picoliter
Weaknesses: Questionable Drivers, No Fax, U.S. Version Does Not Print to CD/DVD Out of the Box
Summary: Color Copy Function (Rating 6/10) Pros: Not holding the copy up against the original, the copy is adequate and gets the job done, high optical resolution of 4800x9600 dpi. Very easy to use from the printer's control panel. Cons: Takes about a minute of prepping before the process begins. The color on the copy has a very slight green tint to it. Text is clearly not as sharp as the original. Colors are not as vibrant as the original. Photo Print/Copy Function (Rating 8/10) Pros: Fast, Good Reproduction Cons: Color gradation is clearly not as good as the original and is very obvious when held up against the original. The quality of the photo prints are very good. Holding a copy against the original, there are some obvious differences; however, photos look good on their own and I am impressed with the quality. Copying a photo from the scanner and printing to photo paper is a snap. Running off a few copies of a photo is very easy to do right from the printer's control panel. Printing from photos directly from slides or negatives is a very easy process. Scanning a negative with four photos takes about 2-3 minutes. The results are very good. CD/DVD Print (10/10) Pros: Fast, Excellent Quality Cons: Does Not Include Label Printing Software With U.S Version This function is not available out-of-the-box to US consumers. Search for "Canon Five Easy Steps" to learn how to enable this feature. This requires an additional purchase of a disc tray as well. Once these steps are completed, you will need to do some tweaking to get the printing aligned with the printable media you have. It takes about one minute to print a high quality CD/DVD label on disc and the results are excellent. Text Printing (8/10) Pros: Fast, Good Quality Cons: Not Laser Quality Text is printed using the blank pigment ink cartridge and produces a better quality than most inkjets. However, I will continue to print text documents with my laser printer for the higher quality and lower toner cost. Software: Setup CD-ROM: My Printer Canon IJ Network Tool MP Navigator EX Easy Photo EX Canon Solution Menu AcrSoft Photo Studio 5 ULead - VideoStudio 9 SE ULead - Cool 3D ULead - DVD MovieFactory 4 I like the software bundle. This gives you the choice to pick and choose what you want to make use of and what you do not want to use. I ran into one of those problems I have helped many other people out with in the past. Something about my XP configuration would not allow me to install the drivers for this printer. I spent hours trying to track down the problem and never found the source. I eventually gave up. I installed the printer on my notebook computer, set up the printer on my network with my router, then I was able to use the printer on my desktop. Once everything was working, I downloaded all the updated software available at Canon's website and this included a new printer driver. After this update, the scanner was no longer detected. I had to uninstall driver and re-install the older driver from the CD. Again, I've never had this many problems with a driver before. I think most of this comes down to your own personal configuration, so you may not have any of these problems like I did. Setting up the printer on the network with my DLink DI-524 went surprisingly well considering the problems mentioned above. The router assigned an IP address, then through the IJ Network Tool, I changed the printer to a static IP for my own purposes. A USB cable is required to initially set up the printer on the network. The Looks: The printer is a bit large, but closes up nicely and looks "clean" sitting on the desk. The paper output tray can remain closed and will open automatically once a print job has started. The hidden bottom paper cartridge is nicely tucked away and goes unnoticed. The slide/negative holder is conveniently hidden away under the top of the scanner lid. This printer is Energy Star Compliant. While running idle, wattage is around 5-6 watts. When the printer goes into a power saving mode, wattage is 1 watt. This makes it very convenient to leave powered on and ready 24/7. I do find the blue LED power light that remains on a bit distracting though. Conclusion: As an AIO printer, everything this does, it does well. Epson has the CD/DVD print capability held with a patent in the U.S., so that is a minor inconvenience. The print head can be removed and cleaned or replaced without having to take it to someone else to be serviced. The printer is reasonably quiet, energy efficient and produces excellent results. The owner's manual is well written, but the printer is so easy to use, the manual will not be needed much.

Strengths: Quiet and fast printing with easy setup.
Weaknesses: Ink tends to create streaks on photo paper.
Summary: I have owned several HP AIO printers and this is the first Canon printer out of the box I am using. Photo print quality cannot beat HP photosmart printers. There seems to be an issue with the ink running and creating lines when photo prints. Printer is good for quick home prints but it is far from lab quality prints. As a AIO, this printer is great. It has a great screen which is easy to use. You can scan pictures to upload directly from the printer to your computer. The scan quality is excellent and beats most HP AIOs. Printer is very quiet. Text print quality is laser like when printing BEST quality otherwise you get jaggered edges. Duples feature works good. Card slots does not show up as separate drives ( unlike HP AIOs which do ). Independent print cartridges is a nice feature as you replace only those cartridges when needed. The ink cartridge is removable and can be replaced if they get clooged ( better then Epson printers where it is built in ).Overall, I would recommend this printer as a regular AIO but look elsewhere if you want to lab quality photos. A big disappointment for Canon flagship AIO photo printer.
